Commissioners approve tough code of conduct

A stringent ethics code awaits those candidates that are successful in Tuesday's commission election. By a vote of 3-2, the sitting commission agreed to a sweeping ordinance that regulates commissioners, candidates for the commission, the city manager and anyone doing business with the city. The new codes goes as far as to require disclosure from commissioners' relatives, clients, creditors, unions or civic groups that benefit from a commission action. It prohibits commissioners from taking part in discussions of issues in which they have an interest. It prohibits sexual relationships between elected officials and city employees.

Commissioner Pam Militello who lobbied hard for the new standards said, "It's long overdue. Considering what the city has gone through, I think we'd want this."

Mayor Sylvia Poitier and Commissioner Gloria Battles opposed the ordinance. Poitier said it was rushed through and Battles had concerns about its financial impact and civil rights implications.
